PERP recessive

Molecular Characteristics for Families

PERP is a gene encodes for a protein that maintains structures called desmosomes, which help attach cells together. PERP also helps in apoptosis, or controlled cell death that occurs naturally throughout the body. Disruption of these functions seem to mainly affect the skin (and possibly the nails and hair), as described in the previous sections.
