IREB2

Molecular Characteristics for Families

IREB2-associated neurodegeneration is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. It occurs when a child inherits two faulty copies of the IREB2 gene, one from each parent. For a child to have the condition, both parents must be carriers of one faulty IREB2 gene. When a couple have had one child with IREB2-associated neurodegeneration, the chance of the condition occurring in a future child is 1 in 4.
