The mutations in APOPT1/COA8 all produce a protein that is absent or does not work at all, which causes mitochondria to produce less energy than what it is needed to maintain the normal function of the brain. Also, when APOPT1/COA8 is not functioning, mitochondria are not protected from some stresses like those caused by free radicals.
